Love at First Sight — My first impression of Yercaud, a charming hill station located in the Salem district of Tamil Nadu, offers a delightful getaway amidst the lush greenery of the Eastern Ghats.

Yercaud: Jewel of the South

I visited this beautiful hill station with my husband and toddler. I will take you on a virtual journey to Yercaud, showcasing its natural beauty, outdoor activities, cultural attractions, local cuisine, and more. So, pack your bags and prepare for my unforgettable trip to Yercaud.

Yercaud is often called the “Jewel of the South” due to its picturesque landscapes, pleasant climate, and serene ambiance. At 1,500 meters above sea level, this hill station is renowned for its abundant forests, coffee plantations, and orange groves. It offers a refreshing escape from the hustle and bustle of city life, making it a popular destination for nature lovers, adventure enthusiasts, and those seeking tranquillity.

We visited Yercaud in the last week of scorching May and were surprised to experience a cool climate and had a pleasant stay for two days owing to the rains.

Getting to Yercaud

Yercaud is well-connected to major cities in Tamil Nadu and neighboring states. The nearest airport is in Salem, approximately 50 kilometers away, while the closest central railway station is in Salem Junction. Travelers can reach Yercaud via well-maintained state highways or private taxis and buses.

We took the recently launched Vande Bharat Express, which we boarded in Chennai and reached Salem in under 6 hours. The fare for this high-speed train ride amounted to approximately 900+ INR per person, providing us with a comfortable journey with snacks.

Upon reaching Salem, we opted for a private taxi for 45 kilometers, which came at INR 1500. The smooth and hassle-free journey allowed us to admire the scenic landscapes. However, while coming back to Salem from Yercaud we had to opt for a longer alternate route due to incoming traffic on the usual road. This diversion added another 30 kilometers to our journey; the taxi fare for our return to Salem amounted to INR 2500.

Accommodation options in Yercaud

Yercaud provides a range of accommodation options to suit different preferences and budgets. From luxury resorts and hotels to cozy homestays and guesthouses, visitors can find suitable places to stay. For the adventurous souls, camping facilities are also available in certain areas, allowing you to immerse yourself in the lap of nature.

Premier Inn

We stayed at Premier Inn after booking through booking.com about a month in advance. Our family consists of two adults and a toddler, so we found the hotel satisfactory. One of the perks of our booking was complimentary breakfast, which we enjoyed. For dinner, we decided to take advantage of the room service option. The room itself was spacious and had a clean and well-maintained bathroom. Proper sanitization measures were taken. Overall, we rate the amenities provided by the hotel as a 3 out of 5. We paid around 5000 INR for a 2-day and 1 Night stay.

The park is a haven for various birds, and we were mesmerized by their beauty and uniqueness. The vibrant Macaws were a sight to behold, and the towering Ostriches left us in awe. The opportunity to interact with the birds made the experience even more special. We were given seeds to feed them, and it was incredible to see them perching on our hands and heads to enjoy their treat. It was a truly magical and unforgettable experience for us and our little ones.

In addition to the birds, the park had animals like rabbits, guinea pigs, goats, and more. My toddler Vaishnavi had a blast feeding and interacting with them. The park also had a small play area that kept children entertained. We found some park areas to be perfect for capturing photos.
